Co-ordinating conjunctions

A coordinating conjunction  makes a connection between two statements,
 or two independent clauses that can stand on their own and are each equally important.

Alex stood first and got a prize.

Alex is in good form but Robin is not.

I went to bed for I was feeling exhausted.
